Where to surf on the south coast

Match the break to your ability—and the hour to the wind.

Where to surf on the south coast

The south coast is not one surf spot. Weligama offers forgiving sand-bottomed waves; nearby reefs reward experienced surfers who know when to wait.

Start early. The wind is often light, the lineup thinner and the light soft across the bay. A good local instructor will choose the break, not just rent a board.

Leave room for breakfast afterwards. Surfing before hoppers is one of the coast’s better routines.

When is surf season in Sri Lanka?

The south and west coasts are at their best from roughly November to April, when the north-east monsoon brings offshore winds. From around May to October the season shifts to the east coast, where Arugam Bay becomes the island's surf capital.

That split means there is good surf somewhere almost all year. We match your beach stay to the month you travel.

Best surf spots for beginners

Weligama Bay has long, gentle sand-bottomed waves and many surf schools, which makes it the classic place to learn. Ahangama and Midigama have mellow reef and point waves for improving surfers, while Hiriketiya is a small, sheltered bay with a relaxed village feel.

Spots for experienced surfers

Reef and point breaks around Midigama, Ahangama and Mirissa reward experienced surfers on the right tide and swell. On the east coast, Arugam Bay's Main Point and nearby breaks such as Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm and Elephant Rock are best from June to September.

Safety and local etiquette

Many breaks are over shallow reef, so ask locally about tides and booties. Respect the line-up, give way to local surfers, and cover up when walking through villages away from the beach. A good instructor will choose the break for the conditions, not just rent you a board.
